Navigating Trauma, Physiology, and Personal Healing

lifestyle medicine Feb 12, 2025

In our latest Chronic Pain Group Visit session with Dr. Cheng Ruan and guest from the Amen Clinics, Dr. Brian Plante, we delved deep into the complex interplay between trauma and physiology. This discussion not only underscored the profound impact trauma has on our bodies and minds but also offered a beacon of hope through various healing modalities. Here's a summary of the insights shared during this enlightening conversation.

Understanding Trauma and Its Impact

The discussion kicked off with an exploration of how traumatic experiences can hypersensitize neural circuits in our brains, often trapping us in survival responses. This heightened state can lead to an increased perception of threats, compelling us to employ avoidance mechanisms that manifest in both behavioral patterns and thought processes. While these responses served our ancestors well, keeping them alive through potential life-threatening situations, in today's context, they often leave us stuck in survival-oriented patterns.

Promoting Embodied Safety

Dr. Ron and Dr. Plante discussed the essential question of how we can create a sense of embodied safety—that feeling of being at ease within our own bodies in the present moment. They highlighted the importance of therapeutic modalities such as EMDR, brain spotting, and somatic experiencing, which can help individuals process and move through stress more swiftly. These therapies aim to bring past trauma into the present in a safe, controlled environment, gradually allowing the brain to release the stress and emotional charge associated with these traumatic experiences.

The Power of Relationships and Micro-Glimmers

The role of healthy, nourishing relationships was emphasized as pivotal in accessing feelings of safety. Moreover, the concept of "micro-glimmers" came to light—little positive experiences that bring joy, peace, or relaxation, such as savoring a morning coffee in the sunshine or cherishing a call from a loved one. Recognizing and savoring these moments can rewire our brains over time, providing the small, yet significant steps towards healing and resilience.

Navigating Expectations and Epigenetics

The conversation ventured into the realm of complementary DNA expression, exploring how trauma responses are not just individual experiences but can span generations. Understanding this helps to break down misconceptions around "overreacting" or "underreacting," replacing judgment with compassion and curiosity.

The Dance of Surrender and Agency

In closing, Dr. Plante articulated the delicate balance—or dance—between surrender and agency. This balance is crucial as we navigate our healing journeys, alternating between taking empowered actions and releasing control to find peace. Embracing curiosity and awareness can unveil deeper layers of understanding, allowing for more authentic connections with ourselves and others.

On Avoidance and Spiritual Bypassing

The concept of spiritual bypassing—using spirituality to avoid dealing with difficult emotions or responsibilities—was another key topic. It's essential, the speakers highlighted, to recognize when such practices serve as avoidance rather than healing. Approaching these realizations with kindness towards ourselves is vital.

Productivity and the Value of Rest

Finally, the conversation shifted to contrasting societal values, questioning the glorification of productivity. The necessity of rest and self-care as foundational to true productivity and creativity was stressed, advocating a move away from valuing time spent over the quality of engagement.

This session offered profound insights and practical tools for personal growth and healing. By fostering curiosity, acknowledging our unique experiences, and embracing the dance of agency and surrender, we can navigate the path to greater personal freedom and resilience. Let this be a reminder to celebrate your "micro-glimmers" and honor your journey, no matter where you are on the path to healing.
